Retrograde
Duration: 10 weeks
Role: Designer
Tools: Figma, Photoshop

Project Overview: I conceptualized a 3-day music festival and all its associated deliverables, including wordmark, lineup poster, ticket stub, and festival app.

Project Context: This project was completed during Fall 2023 as a part of my undergraduate coursework in user-centered design.

Background: My festival is a celebration of all the decades of music. For music enthusiasts who want to explore how music has changed and grown over time, my festival provides a three day experience of different musical eras. Each day celebrates a different era with bands and artists that best encapsulate that musical decade.
Wordmark
For my wordmark, I wanted to convey a feeling of playfulness, funkiness, and grooviness. These feelings led me to choose HWT-Arabesque as my font for my wordmark. The uneven stem widths and tapered terminals matched the vibe I wanted. In order to further emphasize the feeling of funkiness and grooviness, I altered the baseline to create a wave. I also chose a star as my logo as the word ‘Retrograde’ is used in an astronomical sense, which made a star fitting. I chose to alter the points of the star to match the irregularity of the font.
Colors
I wanted to convey a feeling of playfulness, and happiness which is why I went for a gradient of blues and a bright and semi-bright green. My main colors follow a green and blue gradient with the blues mainly designated for my text and the greens for the background. The three blues shown were used for my wordmark.
Ticket Stub
For my ticket, I wanted to ensure that all the level of hierarchy for the information made sense. I wanted the decade of the festival, day, and type of ticket type to be the most prominent pieces.
Lineup Poster
I used my logo of the star to group my introductory information (wordmark, dates, and location) and separate it from my lineup. I used the 3 different shades of blue from my color scheme to help separate/differentiate the 3 days, and to match the gradient of my wordmark.
Map
For my map, I wanted to make it as simple and easy to read as possible so that festival-goers could digest the information and get to where they need to go fast. I simplified the map and removed any extraneous information. I decided to go with a legend to display information about venue locations, parking, and other important information. By doing so, it allowed me to keep my theme consistent by having my logo used as the icon in the map.
Wayfinding Signage
For the wayfinding signage, I chose a freestanding sign that would hang at the entrance to the festival and would guide attendees towards the stages and main area. In terms of design, I decided to just use my wordmark to keep the signage clear and simple.
